Housing Resources
I'm not the biggest fan of finding my own housing while on contract, but sometimes, it's inevitable. I have this weird thing that the less untaxable cash that flows through my hands the less liability I have with the IRS. However, lately, even companies that almost exclusively put you up in hotels are now in the business of negotiating "all-inclusive" contracts with hospitals because it's less expensive for the hospital and it makes the agency more competitive in the staffing market.
Here are the resources I've used or friends have used for housing while on contract.
Here are the resources I've used or friends have used for housing while on contract.
- FurnishedFinder:
- What I like about this site:
- It's geared specifically towards travel nursing; the listings will tell you how close the nearest hospitals are and how walkable the locations are.
- What I don't like about this site:
- When you search for pet-friendly housing, it populates a list that includes housing that is clearly not pet-friendly
- There's no time frame search. You can search for housing in Albuquerque and your options show that they're available in September, but it's April.
- Because it's newer in the game, sometimes landlords don't take their listings off the market if they've booked them using more popular sites, so things aren't available when they say they are
- Landlords often indicate they're renting a private room and it turns out to be a studio - so you can't let the type of housing deter you when searching this site.
- TravelNurseHousing:
- What I like about this site:
- Same as above
- What I don't like about this site:
- It's actually powered by FurnishedFinder, so it's the same site with a different look, kinda like Club Staffing is Med Travelers with a different color scheme on the website.
- AirBnB:
- What I like about this site:
- The search features. You'll almost always be able to find something somewhere.
- What I don't like about this site:
- AirBnB's customer service will not back you up on a long-term rental if your contract is canceled or delayed for any reason... even when you have in writing an agreement with the landlord.
- Can you tell this has happened to me?
- Trulia: I always think of this site like Zillow, but I know people who have used it to rent from while on assignment.
- What I like about this site:
- You can specifically filter for dog-friendly or cat-friendly, if that's important to you.
- What I don't like about this site:
- It's not geared towards short-term rentals, so the prices may not be reflective of that (if an apartment complex allows short-term rentals, they usually increase the prices.
- Most listings are going to be traditional apartments, so you'll have to pay application fees, have your credit checked, obtain utilities, etc.
- The Gypsy Nurse:
- What I like about this site:
- It's part of the Gypsy Nurse website, so everything is really geared towards travel professionals
- What I don't like about this site:
- Not a ton of realistic options. I did one search for Cherry Hill, NJ and came up with a $2800/month return. Furnished Finder had me in the $1600/month range.
- Travel Nurse Housing - The Gypsy Nurse Facebook Group:
- What I like about this:
- It's a Facebook Group, so you can either search through postings (there's a search feature in every facebook group) or you can post where you're going and ask if anyone has options
- It's a group that's open to the professionals and landlords alike
- What I don't like about this:
- I'm going to be honest here, I have to mute this group regularly. There are a lot of landlords and travelers who complain A LOT in this group and sometimes it's just a little too much for me to sift through.
- VRBO - Vacation Rental By Owner
- What I like about this site:
- The Filters
- What I don't like about this site:
- Because it's a vacation rental site, it's vacation rental prices.
- Craigslist: I'm putting this up here because people still use it. It's not my thing. I once had roommates from Craigslist when I got out of grad school and was living in Brooklyn. I haven't used it since.
- Extended Stay Hotels - sometimes calling the manager of a local branch of an extended stay hotel will get you a deal that you can afford in your budget.
- Also, when you book 30 days at a hotel in most states, they drop the taxes and fees.
- Options of Extended Stay Hotels include:
If you know of other options, please comment and I will add them!
Happy Traveling

The primary role of the landlord is to provide accommodation that is of a decent standard and ‘fit for purpose’. It is the landlord’s responsibility to ensure the safety of their property and to keep it well maintained. This applies to the whole structural part of the property as well as interior fittings, furnishings and appliances. It is also the role of the landlord to make sure that you, as a tenant, are aware of your duties and responsibilities and to help address any issues you may have before and during your tenancy. Landlords are also required by law to protect your deposit in a government approved tenancy deposit service. https://www.ybrea.co.uk
